Meniscus surgery recovery:
meniscectomy or repair, two timelines
Two operations, two timelines
Faced with a torn meniscus, the surgeon has two options: remove the damaged part, a partial meniscectomy, or stitch it back together, a meniscal repair. Both are done by arthroscopy. Recovery, on the other hand, takes a very different length of time.
Recovery depends on the operation. After a partial meniscectomy, athletes return to sport after about 2 months on average; after a meniscal repair, after about 6 months, with full weight-bearing most often recommended between weeks 4 and 6. In both cases, the Game Ready is used from the day you get home, in sessions of 90 minutes, to ease the pain and swelling of the first days.
After a meniscectomy
The torn part is removed and the rest of the meniscus stays in place. In athletes, recent studies put the return to sport at 2.1 months on average, with 98% going back to their sport1.
The thigh takes longer than the knee. Studies show a clear loss of quadriceps strength in the first month, still measurable between 3 and 6 months, while everyday movements come back within a few weeks3.
After a meniscal repair
The meniscus is stitched and has to heal, so the knee is protected for longer. In a study of published protocols, the most frequent recommendation is to move the knee from the first week, to regain full bending at around 6 weeks, and full weight-bearing between the 4th and 6th week2.
The return to sport comes at 5.8 months on average1, and 6 months is the time point studies use most often2.
If the cruciate ligament was operated on at the same time, our week-by-week timeline covers what comes next: ACL recovery timeline: week by week, from surgery to sport.
The Game Ready and the Compex after meniscus surgery
In the first days the knee is swollen and painful, whichever operation was done. Studies in knee surgery show that with compression, cold eases pain better on days 2 and 3, and reduces swelling more over the first two days, than cold alone4.
The Game Ready® is used from the day you get home, in sessions of 90 minutes, as often as possible, at 4 °C. Compression is low in the first week, then medium.
The Compex® SP 8.0 is used to strengthen the thigh while the knee is protected, especially after a repair, when bending and weight-bearing are still limited.
Delivery within 24 hours, in Dubai and in the six other emirates. On arrival, a member of the KOLDE team adjusts the knee wrap and stays with you for the first session. The KOLDE knee protocol then sets out the sessions phase by phase, and a dedicated customer service team stays reachable throughout your rental.
Common questions
How do I know which operation I had?
Your operation report says so: “meniscectomy” if part of the meniscus was removed, “suture” or “repair” if it was stitched.
Is the Game Ready useful after a simple meniscectomy too?
Yes. The swelling and pain of the first days are there after a meniscectomy as well, even if what follows moves faster.
How long does the rental last?
Most rentals after knee surgery last two to three weeks. The dates are up to you, and the rental can be extended if needed.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, the rental needs no prescription and is booked directly online.
